Ruthie Mae Rivers was born on February 4, 1965. She is the loving daughter of Charlie Rivers, Sr., and Maggie Beasley Rivers of Monroe County, AL. She was a loving person who enjoyed spending time with her family.
“Ruthie Mae”, as she was affectionately known, attended Monroe County High School where she played softball. In her later years, she continued her love for the sport and participated in the Monroe County Women’s League for many years. She played softball for the Clausell Stars and Clausell All-Stars. Both teams were known through the state and in Florida for being one of the best around.
Ruthie Mae worked at Standard Furniture for years before she began working as a Cook in the deli at Piggly Wiggly. Her fried chicken and other dishes drew many. She was a great cook, not only in the Deli, but at home. Her nieces and nephews all called her “Big Mama” and often gathered at her home to enjoy her company and her meals. She was lively, loving, sweet and kind. Her home became the family house where people gathered to enjoy one another. Chicken wasn’t her only famous dish; Ruthie Mae could bake the sweetest cakes around.
In the late afternoon hours of Monday, November 6, 2017, God called another Angel to rest. Her work here on earth was complete. She leaves behind her longtime, loving and devoted husband, Eddie “Puink” Locke of Monroeville, AL; two sons: Lee “Tony” (Brenda) Rivers and Antwan Rivers both of Monroeville, AL; one daughter, Bioncia Rivers of Monroeville, AL; three sisters: Charlie Mae (Charles ) Smith of Moss Point, MS; Cynthia (Abraham) McMillian of Monroeville, AL; and Donna Rivers of Pensacola, FL; twelve grandchildren, a host of loved nieces and nephews; five friends who were loved like true sisters: Brenda Bullard, Priscilla Bullard, Sue Lee Jackson, Valerie Lucas and Bessie Cunningham; many cousins and other relatives and many devoted friends.
