PFC Silas Gary, Sr.
Mr. Silas Gary was born on January 22, 1934 in Mobile, Alabama. He was one of six children born to Russell and May Bell Gary. Silas accepted Jesus Christ at an early age. In the early afternoon of Wednesday, August 8, 2018, God saw that there was no more laboring for him here on earth and gave him sweet rest.
Mr. Gary was educated in the Mobile County Public School System, and pursued higher education at Alabama State University. He enlisted in the United States Army, and served during the Korean War. After an Honorable Discharge he became a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service until retirement.
A kind spirited, industrious, and energetic man, Silas Gary enjoyed the simplicities of life: organic gardening, good literature, history, and fine arts. As a health-conscious person, he believed in his daily walks and eating wholesome food. His love for art and history ultimately led him to be involved with the Monroe County Heritage Museum. As a Real Estate Agent and carpenter, his legacy will continue to live on in the community as evident by the numerous homes he built, and the lives he impacted.
He leaves to cherish and share his memories: his devoted wife Annette Gary, three sons: Silas (Jo-An) Gary, Jr., of Tarzanna, CA , Russell (Janay) Gary of Wahiawa, HI, and Joseph (Roxanne) Gary of Dallas, TX; four daughters: Sonya (James) Sims of Mobile, AL, Kenyatta Robinson of Mobile, AL, Monica Brady of Atlanta, GA, and Anna (Herbert) Smith of Fultondale, AL; eight grandchildren: Danica, Chelsea, Marissa, Rea’Van, Shayvonda, Kys, Joseph Jr., and Jhaela; three great-grandchildren: India, Isla, and Isaiah; a devoted caretaker: Theodore Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
