John Martin, Jr. was born on Dec. 2, 1952, to Ernest Martin and Lula Parker Martin. He was one of two children born to this union. He accepted Christ at an early age and united with the New Chapel Baptist Church in Mexia.  Although John was not an ordained minister, he found it imperative that he share the word of God with whomever he came in contact with. He believed the word and felt that it good and in decent order to tell others of God’s Grace and Mercy.

He enjoyed the simplicities of life. Spending time with his family and teaching others about the things in life that he knew, was enough to keep him happy. He would often tell people, “I’ll teach you something if you wanna be taught.” As long as someone was “willing” to be taught, John had a lesson for them. He attended school in Monroe County and completed many of his courses. He went on to obtain his GED from Reid State Technical College.

John was a hard-working man who was inclined to work to provide for his family. Throughout his lifetime, he worked several jobs, including working as an Orderly at the Monroe County Hospital, drove trucks for Booker Trucking, R&R Contractors and ultimately decided to become an independent truck Driver. He purchased his own truck and worked for himself until he saw fit to retire.

After retirement, he found himself busy around the house. He would fix on things and most importantly, tend to his garden. John grew the finest peas, greens, tomatoes, okra and anything he could think that he wanted to see, he grew.

In the evening hours of Friday, May 6, 2022, God saw that his work here on earth had come to an end. He gently closed his eyes and entered into the Kingdom. He is at rest now. He was preceded in death by two children: Gerald Bonner and Charlotte Martin. Oh, what a glorious time he had, when he was met at the gates by his children, parents and his only sibling, Louise!

He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Martin of Mexia, AL; his daughters: April (Carius) Packer of Winder, GA, Marcie (Joseph) Vires of Mobile, AL, Johnita Martin of Montgomery, AL and Ruby (Travis) Bullard of Monroeville, AL; sons: Tony (Audrey) Martin of Excel, AL, John (Tawandra) Martin, III of Mexia, AL, Eric Martin of Mexia, AL, Darris Knight of Prattville, AL, Jonathan Andrews of Excel, AL and Thaddeus (Lydia) Rivers of Monroeville, AL; a host of grandchildren, a devoted sister-in-law: Darlene Lett of Monroeville, AL; several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other loved relatives and many friends.
