David Porter, Jr. was born on September 18, 1945 to the late David Porter, Sr., and the late Mary Francis (Clemons) Porter of Little River, Alabama.
David accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour at an early age and joined Mt. Triumph Baptist Church in Little River, Alabama.
David met and married Autherine Williams. From this union they had one beautiful daughter, Andrea N. Smith (James Smith, Jr.) of Birmingham, Alabama.
David relocated to Detroit, Michigan in 1969 where he met and married Carrie Goldsmith. From this union they had three beautiful children - Daryl Porter, Lisa Charnetta , and Kimberly Tameka of Detroit Michigan.
In Detroit, David worked at a steel mill. Later he began working at a place called Great Scott, and from there he began his own business as a store owner of “Will & Dave Party Store” with his brother Will. From that David began his own delivery business until his health failed.
David was a great family man. His favorite saying was, “Are you a chump or a champ?”
David was always visiting Alabama to attend family functions. He was the president of the Detroit, Michigan Chapter of “Roots of Alabama”. He will be greatly missed by all.
David leaves behind four children to cherish his loving memories – Andrea N. Smith (James Smith, Jr.) of Birmingham, Alabama; and Daryl Porter, Lisa Charnetta (Jirani), and Kimberly Tameka — all of Detroit, Michigan. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren – Quinton Smith and Jevante Smith of Birmingham, Alabama; Brittney Smith of Austin, Texas; and Darneishia Porter, Dominic Porter, Dante McGee, and Denia Johnson — all of Detroit, Michigan.
He also leaves behind five brothers to cherish his memories — Will Porter, Fred Porter, and John Porter from Little River, Alabama; Edmond Porter (Estelle) from Mobile, Alabama; and Elijah Porter (Juanita) from Saraland, Alabama.
He also leaves behind five sisters — Bessie Eason and Mamie Dean from Detroit, Michigan; Annie (Eddie) German from Perdido, Alabama; Rosa (Rev. Charles) Farmer from Bay Minette, Alabama; and Evelyn (Rev. Robert) Brown from Stockton, AL. One sister, Fannie (Willie) Peoples preceded him in death.
He also leaves behind a devoted friend, Ms. Alma R. Williams, from Detroit, Michigan and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
